The Parramatta Eels are reportedly looking to add an unsigned playmaker to their roster for the upcoming season as they work on strengthening their team under new coach Jason Ryles. Ronald Volkman, who last played in Round 27 of the 2023 season, has spent the entire 2024 year recuperating from shoulder surgery, casting doubt on his ability to return to the field. After being released by the New Zealand Warriors, Volkman was expected to have a breakout season after signing a one-year contract with the St George Illawarra Dragons. However, an unexpected injury derailed those plans.
Volkman’s situation took a turn for the worse when medical scans revealed he required surgery, sidelining him for the entire season. Consequently, he was released from the Dragons, as his contract had not been registered with the NRL, even though the team had announced his signing and shared images of him training. Now, according to reports from The Sydney Morning Herald, the Eels are interested in securing Volkman’s services for the 2025 NRL season to bolster their options in the halves.
Parramatta is not the only club keen on signing Volkman. Initial reports indicate that the Manly Sea Eagles were close to finalizing a deal with him, and interest has also been expressed by the Dolphins and the Cronulla Sharks. Volkman is regarded as a promising talent, having shown flashes of his ability in his limited appearances in the NRL, yet he has yet to fully realize his potential.
While Volkman may not immediately challenge for a starting spot at Parramatta, given the presence of established players like Dylan Brown and Mitchell Moses, he could serve as a valuable backup as he continues to develop his skills in reserve grade. His addition would also create competition with new recruit Dean Hawkins from the South Sydney Rabbitohs, following the departures of Ethan Sanders and Daejarn Asi to the Canberra Raiders and Castleford Tigers, respectively.
In a recent interview, Volkman expressed enthusiasm about the next steps in his career, stating, “I’m eager to see what the upcoming months have in store.” He acknowledged the motivation he felt watching others succeed during his recovery, saying, “Once I get the opportunity, I will give it my all. Rugby league is a short-lived career, and I want to make the most of it.” He views this next chapter as a chance for a fresh start, emphasizing his determination to seize the moment when it arrives.
