Blackburn Rovers’ attacking midfielder has been sidelined for the start of this season and hasn’t featured yet for the Championship side.
Gilsenan, 21, isn’t quite ready to return yet and the Lancashire outfit are being patient with the prospect as they wait for the right time to throw him back in.
John Eustace has confirmed that they are looking to play a friendly over the course of the international break and has said, as per the Lancashire Telegraph: “We have organised a bounce game for those that need the minutes. It’s important we get everyone up to the same speed and I think we’re getting there. It’s important that the whole squad gets match minutes to make sure they’re match-ready. We’ll use that and the international break to prepare and make sure we’re ready to go.”
Blackburn Rovers injury latest
Blackburn Rovers won’t want to rush Gilsenan to avoid making his injury worse.
He joined them back in 2019 and penned his first professional contract a couple of years later.
The Republic of Ireland youth international made his first-team debut in August 2023 in a Carabao Cup clash against Walsall.
Gilsenan has since made five more appearances and has chipped in with two goals.
He was born in Perth, Australia, and had early spells down under with the likes of Carramar Cougars, Sorrento and Perth Glory before moving over to Europe.
Barcelona snapped him up in 2012 and he spent two years with the La Liga outfit.
Liverpool then lured him in England and he had five seasons with the Premier League giants before Blackburn Rovers came calling.
What now?
Eustace’s men lost 3-2 away at Plymouth Argyle last time out and will want to bounce back from that loss.
They are back in action with a home match against Swansea City on 19th October.
Blackburn Rovers are sat in 8th place in the table and are only outside the play-offs by a point.
