“End of an Era: Golden Earring Retires After 60 Years, Fans in Tears”
After six decades of rock legacy, the legendary Dutch rock band Golden Earring has officially announced their retirement, marking the end of one of the longest and most iconic careers in European music history. Known globally for hits like “Radar Love,” “Twilight Zone,” and “When the Lady Smiles,” the band’s decision to call it quits has sent shockwaves through generations of fans, leaving many in a wave of nostalgia and heartbreak.
The band, which first formed in 1961 in The Hague, the Netherlands, became one of the very few Dutch acts to break into the international market with significant success. Their 1973 hit “Radar Love” became a rock anthem, covered by numerous artists and featured in countless films, commercials, and driving playlists across the globe. Golden Earring’s unique ability to blend melodic rock, lyrical storytelling, and musical innovation helped them maintain relevance over the decades, releasing more than 25 studio albums and touring extensively in Europe and beyond.
The decision to retire was not made lightly. In early statements, the band cited health reasons, particularly the diagnosis of guitarist George Kooymans with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. The heartbreaking revelation left both the band members and fans devastated, prompting a wave of support and tributes from all corners of the music world.
In an emotional open letter, frontman Barry Hay expressed deep gratitude to fans:
> “We’ve had an extraordinary journey. From smoky clubs to the world’s biggest stages, we owe it all to the people who stood with us, album after album, show after show.”
Fans across the Netherlands and worldwide have taken to social media to express their grief and admiration. Hashtags like #ThankYouGoldenEarring and #RadarLoveForever trended shortly after the announcement, as countless stories, concert memories, and messages of love poured in.
Dutch radio stations played back-to-back Golden Earring classics, while spontaneous tribute gatherings formed in The Hague, the band’s hometown. For many, Golden Earring’s music was not just sound—it was the soundtrack of their youth, their road trips, their love stories.
Though the band may no longer perform together, their music remains eternal. Golden Earring may have played their final note, but their echo
will never fade.
